Being an Assassin ain’t easy. Being an Assassin in Paris during the French Revolution? Even tougher. That’s why the developers of Assassin’s Creed Unity have gone out of their way to provide even more tools, gear, weapons and customization options to help you outfit your Arno for the smoothest possible path through Paris. But those in-game essentials aren’t the only items you’ll have in your arsenal. The Assassin’s Creed Unity Companion app offers a much-needed helping hand, with detailed 3D maps, the full database and two exclusive gameplay experiences.

“The key word that defines the Assassin’s Creed Unity Companion app is meaningful,” says Producer Stephane Jankowski. “We are all Assassin’s Creed fans and we all love mobile gaming, so we asked ourselves how to make the best use of mobile screens for all the Assassin’s Creed fans – including us.”
The best part? Much of what you do in the app will earn you rewards in the game itself. With 63 Nomad chests in total (more on those later), players can earn everything from cash to weapons and gear – all by simply enjoying the extra gameplay in this free app. Here’s a full look at what’s on offer, including supported systems.

MAPS AND DATABASE

The most obvious use for the companion app is also one of the most essential: the full in-game 3D map of Paris. Once synced with your game, the map updates in real-time with almost no delay. Follow your movements through the City of Light, and set markers to track collectibles or select your next side-missions. And if you forget what a particular icon means, just tap on it to reveal additional information. In other words, you can continue to play your game without ever pausing to pull up the in-game map on your TV or monitor.

“We poured a lot of love and sweat into the 3D map,” Jankowski says. “We wanted to have something just amazing and that works smoothly on the largest number of devices. The companion app gives you the feeling of having Paris in the palm of your hand, which is just so cool.”
The companion app map also offers something new for the franchise: heat maps. Now you can see where players go during missions – or when simply exploring the open world. Think of it like a crowd-sourced helper: Maybe you’re seeking a better route through a tough mission… or maybe you want to race down a rue less traveled, just to see what you might be missing. This is a great way to check out how other players tackle those open-ended mod missions. You can even filter the heat maps to focus on specific layers, such as where conflict starts, where kills happen, and where other players are desynced. “With the heat maps, we’re offering a whole new way to discover Paris through the eyes – and hidden blades – of other players,” Jankowski says. “It’s a unique perspective that gives you tons of insights!”

Finally, the app has the full in-game database, which unlocks at the same rate you unlock the entries in-game. Read up on the people, places and things of Paris during the French Revolution. Or check out the game’s e-manual and training videos (both synced to match your system of choice). Expand your knowledge and understanding of Assassin’s Creed Unity wherever you are. “Browsing through the database is really cool,” Jankowski says, “but browsing through all the game’s items while on your mobile… it’s just priceless.”

NOMAD MISSIONS

The Assassin’s Creed Unity companion app has two exclusive gameplay experiences. Nomad Missions are similar to Kenway’s Fleet from Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, but this time around the gameplay is deeper and the rewards are even bigger. When you start a Nomad mission, you can select up to four Assassins, whom you assign based on how they fit with the mission parameters. Every Assassin has three stats – Attack, Defense, Stealth – which you can upgrade using Nomad points accrued by completing these missions. You begin with just two Assassins but you can hire more, also by using Nomad points. Nomads also gain experience and level up.

How, exactly, do these Nomad missions unfold? You start by selecting an available mission, which will display a description, the reward, the duration (how long your Assassins will be occupied) and the required Assassin level. Next, you select the Brotherhood members who best fit the recommended skills (some missions might prioritize Attack and Stealth over Defense, for example); once selected, the app will display the odds of success… and off you go. Keep in mind that your Brotherhood members will lose health and can even be killed on missions; you can replenish their health by spending Nomad points.
Of course, the most important part is the reward for a job well done. Each Nomad mission has up to three rewards, which can be retrieved via Nomad treasure chests placed throughout the game. These rewards include cash, artifacts, gear and costumes. All Nomad missions are replayable, so you can grind away to your heart’s delight, earning more Nomad points to upgrade your stable of Assassins and earn even more rewards.

GLYPH PUZZLES

The other app-based gameplay has you rotating landmarks to find hidden glyphs. Think of these as interactive 3D puzzles. Once you find a specific landmark in the game, the associated Glyph puzzle becomes available on the app. With each puzzle you have a limited number of moves, in which you rotate and tap on the landmark to find a glyph that’s been carefully integrated into the architecture.

Each landmark can be played multiple times, offering up to nine different rewards – including unlocking Nomad missions. Naturally, the glyph placement changes each time, and the puzzles get progressively tougher. Happy hunting!

CUSTOMIZE ARNO

When not playing one of the app-exclusive games or exploring the database, there’s no better way to spend your time than fiddling with one of the newest next-gen features in Assassin’s Creed Unity: customizing your own Arno. The app includes the full catalog of in-game weapons and gear, including descriptions, modifiers and requirements. You can pull up your latest loadout and compare new gear with what you currently have equipped. It’s a great tool to use when away from the game, allowing you to prep for that co-op session you have planned later that evening.
